The Peluso 2247 SE Tube Microphone is a large diaphragm condenser microphone that captures the same low frequency nuances as the original Neumann 47, with smooth mids and balanced highs.

To achieve the distinctive "47" sound we have found the 6SJ7 American style steel tube provides the same sonic quality as the VF14. With nearly identical specifications, the only discernable difference between these two tubes is a 2dB quieter noise floor on the 5693/6SJ7. These tubes are thoroughly tested and fully covered by our 3-year warranty. This American style tube is readily available and allows us to offer the Peluso 2247 SE Tube Microphone at a very competitive price. Professional engineers enjoy great success with the Peluso 2247 SE Tube Microphone for a wide range of applications from male and female vocals, acoustic guitar to tenor sax. There are countless applications for this versatile microphone. Known for its clear sound while capturing the low frequency nuances of the original U-47 with smooth mid range and balanced high end. Engineers will be proud to have a hand built microphone with the sound of a genuine U-47.

The Peluso 2247 SE Tube Microphone is paired with the Peluso MX-56 power supply. The dual sided capsule in the 22 47 SE enable the power supply to feature 9 polar patterns in an array from omni-directional to cardioid to figure eight. The 22 47 SE features Peluso's heavy-duty 8-pin screw on cable connector. The large diameter pins in the screw on connector give a tight and secure cable connection designed to perform for a lifetime of use.

Microphone kit comes as a complete system including: 2247 SE Microphone in a Wood Box, Power Supply, New-style 8-Pin Screw on Cable Assembly, and a Shock Mount all packed in a Flight Case. Acoustically matched pairs are available upon special request.

    Clear and warm

I use a lot of different mics. This one does not sound like a U47, but it sounds better than some U47's that I have tried to use. I recently recorded Jimmy Gaudreau for an upcoming release (11-12-10), and it worked incredibly well (beautiful harmony parts with a 60+ year old voice). It also was the mic of choice for a recent producer who was cultivating a 23 year-old woman whose husky voice sounded like clear honey through the 2247SE. I am going to buy a pair for live acoustic recordings (wide-ORTF).

    Pleasantly surprised.....

When ordering the mic, John Peluso was asked which of his 47's he believed would give off the vibe of a 47 without sounding too "old". Form the standard, SE , and LE versions, he recommended the SE. During testing, I expected it to sound mid-forward and un-hyped, but no where near as good as it did when used on vocals. We used a Neve 1272 into a Retro Sta Level and the results were magic. The engineer and both producers noted how intimate the sound was, tight lows, without being too boomy, very balanced, intimate mids, and pleasing present but not over-bearing highs. A perfect blend of each, which makes eq'ing easier. For male vox, we preferred the Brent Averill 312a on this specific singer, but felt the sound was just as good. I would recommend this to anyone is who wants 47 vibe, but with a modern edge on overall sound. Its everything a 47 should be, minus the worn, rusty "old" vibe (unless you're into that). If you are, I would recommend looking into the LE model.

What We Think

The Peluso 2247 SE is perhaps the best value in Peluso's 47-style microphone offerings. Why? Well, improvements in the circuit design as well as moving up to a premium and readily available American made 'steel tube' improves the low-frequency performance and results in a tighter, better defined bottom. According to Peluso, this mic can't be picked out from the 'LE' version with the German-made tube in blind tests. Our experience with this microphone is that it is what we like to call 'medium-voiced'; meaning that it works well for most singers since the 47-style capsule sits right in the middle of the range of the classic microphone range. That's one of the reasons why a vintage U 47 microphone is so loved by studios and engineers the world over - they flat-out work, and sound exceptional in the process! However, the original U-47 microphones are all over the map due to the electrical drift that has occurred over the years, as well as the fact that repairs had to have been carried out on each microphone and by different folks. So it's very reasonable to say that you are never, ever going to find two that sound much alike. With this in mind, Peluso designed the 2247 family to perform like a U 47 would have right off the assembly line 60+ years ago. Understandably, the 2247 SE is a brighter microphone, but it's certainly not shrill. It is still quite smooth and buttery on top and it begs to be worked closely due to it's nice proximity effect. We found the 2247 SE to be an exceptional match with the A Designs Pacifica for a hip-hop / modern rock vocal. But a Vintech X73, Chandler Limited TG Channel, or Great River ME-1NV would be excellent companions for this microphone.
