The Electro Voice RE20 Dynamic Microphone is a legendary broadcast announcer microphone featuring minimal proximity effect. With a wide frequency response coupled with excellent transient response, the RE20 is truly an industry standard, a firm favorite among broadcasters and sound engineers worldwide.

The Electro Voice RE20 Dynamic Microphone's popularity also extends into music production as a premium grade instrument microphone. Its Variable-D™ design and heavy-duty internal pop filter excel for close-in voice work, while an internal element shock-mount reduces vibration-induced noise. The Electro Voice RE20 Dynamic Microphone can be found in almost every major TV and radio broadcast studio. But the Electro Voice RE20 also is a staple for instrument and vocal recording in professional recording studios the world over. The wide frequency response, coupled with excellent transient response, make the RE20 easily comparable to the finest condenser cardioid microphones and an easily operated "bass tilt down" switch corrects spectrum balance for use in long-reach situations or other applications where bass attenuation is needed.

A true cardioid microphone, the Electro Voice RE20 offers greatest rejection at 180º off axis - directly to the rear of the microphone. Pattern control is so consistent that the frequency response is nearly independent of angular location of the sound source, creating virtually no off-axis coloration, yet providing greatest possible rejection of unwanted sounds. An integral blast and wind filter covers each acoustic opening on the Electro Voice RE20. In recording sessions or on stage, singers can "close talk" the microphone, singing with their lips almost touching the grille screen with no worry of "P-pops" or excessive sibilance. Part of the filter also shock mounts the internal microphone element, reducing the transfer of vibrations from external sources.

The exceptional performance of the Electro Voice RE20 is achieved by using a large Acoustalloy diaphragm in combination with an exceptionally low-mass aluminum voice coil. Using this diaphragm assembly, the Electro Voice RE20 is capable of reproducing extremely high sound pressure levels with no fear of the overload and distortion often experienced with phantom-powered condensers. The Electro Voice RE20 will also continue to function flawlessly in high humidity and elevated temperatures that would seriously degrade competitive condenser microphones. A massive steel housing and effective hum-bucking coil assure the Electro Voice RE20's resistance to magnetically induced hum and noise. This means the Electro Voice RE20 can be used successfully in situations where other microphones would experience unacceptable levels of hum and buzz.

By exploiting the strength of its steel housing and employing a mechanical nesting concept, EV designers have created an exceptionally rugged microphone with superior handling noise rejection ideally suited for professional uses.

    Great mic!
    Edward

This mic works great for close and aggressive vocal styles, and sounds nice on drums and percussion too! I've also used it on strings and amps with nice results... a good all-purpose mic, very solid and sturdy construction!

One of the most versatile & best mics around...
    Jason Dickerson

This mic has been around forever... it's the defacto FM broadcast mic, it sounds good in front of many singers (by design, it has no proximity effect), it's great for floor toms, kick drum and bass cabs, it even sounds good on some guitar cabs. In my opinion, the best large diaphragm dynamic mic ever made. Probably one of the best mic purchases I ever made.

What We Think

The Electro Voice RE20 is 'the old standby'; a mic that will work in a number of capacities, despite broadcast and voice-over work being its primary design intent. Engineers have routinely used this mic on kick drums, bass guitar cabinets, and even used them for overheads (see the Led Zeppelin DVD and you'll see them over Bonzo's kit!). In fact, it's Beatles and David Bowie engineer Ken Scott's go-to mic for kick-drum via an internal elastic suspension that he rigs inside the drum. The RE20 also excels for bass guitar cabinet, where the character of the amp needs to come through without harshness. In fact, this mic is wonderful at providing a smooth (but certainly not dull) character. Overall, this microphone will surprise those who assume that to do great vocals for rock tracks, record tubas, or kick drums, etc, that a dynamic microphone simply won't do... hogwash. The EV RE20 will deliver time and time again.
