Audio Technica AT4033/CL Cardioid Microphone w/ AT8449 Shock Mount

Audio Technica AT4033/CL Cardioid Microphone a studio classic and bluegrass favorite!

Audio Technica AT4033/CL Cardioid Microphone w/ AT8449 Shock Mount Details

The classic edition of the legendary Audio Technica AT4033 microphone, the side-address Audio Technica AT4033/CL offers low-noise, symmetrical, transformerless circuitry that results in exceptional transient response and clean output signals. A studio classic and bluegrass favorite, the Audio Technica AT4033/CL cardioid studio condenser is the microphone that broke the US$1000-barrier in its class. A strong up-front presence characterizes the sonic signature of this 40 Series pro-audio classic. The Audio Technica AT4033/CL??s 80Hz high-pass filter easily switches between flat frequency response and a low-end roll-off that diminishes ambient noise and popping with closely-miked vocals.

The AT4033/CL is a side-address fixed-charge condenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern. It is designed to meet the most critical acoustic requirements of professional recording, broadcast and sound reinforcement.

The microphone requires 48V phantom power for operation. The cardioid polar pattern of the microphone is more sensitive to sound originating directly in front of the element, making it useful in controlling feedback, reducing pickup of unwanted sounds and providing isolation between performers. The output of the microphone is a 3-pin XLRM-type connector.

The 4033/CL is equipped with a switchable 10 dB pad and a switch that permits choice of flat response or low-frequency roll-off (via integral 80 Hz high-pass filter).

What We Think

This is one of my favorite mics of all times. It is a clean and natural mic, and pretty much just gives you what you give it. It does a bit of a smoothed out top end, but it is well balanced, and does not come off dark - there is still good detail and clarity in it. I will typically grab this for acoustic instruments, backing vocals, piano, and drum overheads. Anywhere you want a smooth but honest capture of the sound source, without having to worry about proximity effect, this is a great mic to reach for. I've always loved Audio Technica Mics, and this one has been a favorite for many years now.

if you only have one mic then this one May 16, 2012
Reviewer: Headphonomenon
This is the mic I always recommend to home and project studio owners who are looking for one mic to do it all. For the money you can't go wrong. It is clear and open and sounds good on a wide variety of different sources. I have had three for almost a decade and they are rock solid.

Audio Technica AT4033/CL August 30, 2011
Reviewer: Steve Cruz
This is a workhorse microphone, worthy of a place in every mic cabinet right alongside bread and butter mics like SM57s.

An excellent choice for many sources, I've had success with the 4033 on acoustic guitars, electric guitar amps, congas, bongos, djembes, tambourines, triangle, shakers and more than a few female vocalists. On a few of those sources, it beat out microphones almost 10 times the price!

If you need a mic to help bring a source "forward" in the mix, this might be the perfect fit.

I give 5 stars because it's such a great value, and the package here includes AT's sturdy shockmount and a protective case.

Every mic locker should have one of these. January 21, 2011
Reviewer: jay matheson from columbia, SC United States
This mic may not be the best for every situation but I've never really heard it sound bad. i have used one of these for a long time. it's works well on screaming vocalists, female and gang vocals. it's pattern is a bit wide so I wouldn't use it where isolation is an issue. if a singer likes to move around a lot though the wider pattern is a lifesaver. this mic often gets the call during sessions leaving the 2000$ mics in the dust.

great on acoustic guitar/vocals September 27, 2010
Reviewer: Thomas Szy from Hellertown, PA United States
Honestly, i think this is the best LDC mic that one can buy for the money.  Acoustic guitar comes across detailed with good transient representation, but without being harsh. Similarly, vocals are smooth and present, but without that terrible siblance that are found on a TON of other LDC's in this price range.  Best bang for the buck i've discovered in a long time

Excellent in the mix, for some can be a bit harsh July 26, 2010
Reviewer: Michelangelo Trujillo from Ann Arbor, MI United States
The 4033 was the go to mic in my studio for years, simply because I didn't have any other LDC's. I recorded over 60 albums and demos with it, through API, Neve 9098, TLA Classic series, and other mic pre's, often in to a distressor. I used them with success on acoustic guitar, vocals, and drum overheads. It wasn't until I started expanding my mic collection that I really understood the place the 4033 occupied in the sonic palate. By comparison, it's high end content can appear to be a bit harsh, aggressive, or  sharp, and certainly more present then some other mics. This can be good if you're going for a produced rock sound, and has worked very well for me and always translated wonderfully in the mix. It's definitely a great sounding mic and even when I AB it with mic's I use more often now I still think it's an excellent mic.
