"Nobody passes flat-signal (all settings off) through a compressor plug-in just to make it sound better. But by simply inserting the Universal Audio LA-2A into the signal chain to simply "exist" without compressing or limiting, you can instantly add pleasing character to a featured element of your mix. In fact, it's done quite frequently to simply add size and dimension not found in the original track. But the LA-2A really begins to shine when compressing vocals. The LA-2A is arguably the king of vocal compressor/limiters because of how it just does everything it is supposed to do in reeling in the dynamic range of a vocal. It never sucks the life out of the vocal to accomplish the end result, which also makes it a regular treatment for bass guitars and select electric guitar tracks. The now cliche' terms "fat" and "warm" seem to have been invented solely to describe the character of this legendary piece. Between the LA-2A and UA's 1176LN, I really cannot think of any other gear more indispensable to achieving great sound - period. Of course you can make records without Universal Audio equipment... but why in the world would you ever want to?"
