Studio Projects C4 Condenser Microphones

The Studio Projects C4 Condenser Microphone is small diaphragm condenser microphone set featuring interchangeable capsules, switchable -10dB pad/high pass filter and a linear low-noise, solid state amplifier body.

The microphone’s modularity makes it a useful multi-purpose tool intended for all-around use on stage, on location and in studios of all caliber.

As a cardioid (pressure gradient) microphone, the C4 provides excellent pickup of on-axis sources while attenuating extraneous sound occurring from around and behind the mic. This makes it ideal for close miking of individual instruments where bleed from other nearby instruments or sound is undesirable. The C4 cardioids also make excellent stereo pairs for coincident and near-coincident miking techniques such as X-Y and ORTF. Additionally the C4’s are quite useful on a drum kit as overheads and on toms.

Used as an omni-directional (pressure) microphone, the C4 offers a warm tonal response and is recommended especially for close miking in favorable acoustical environments. There is very little off axis coloration owing to the inherent physical properties of pressure capsules, and it is this - combined with the low self-noise of the mic amplifier that makes the C4 omni an excellent ambience mic –especially in pairs. In a good room, a pair of omni’s can provide a vibrant and live feel to recordings, which is not achievable through the use of directional microphones.

Go with Rode NT5s instead June 23, 2010
Reviewer: Gabriel Grieser from Seattle, WA United States
I bought a pair of these several years ago, and the model has changed slightly, so hopefully they've improved. I originally chose them over the Rode NT5s because of their extra bells and whistles, plus some good reviews. They come in a nice big aluminum flight case with nice shockmounts and a stereo bar, plus both cardioid and omni capsules. At first they appeared to sound good, albeit bright, although one of the mics in this "matched pair" appeared to be a little quieter. Also, flipping the pad switch=loud horrible pop. One capsule crapped out during a live recording session, producing loud wind/AM radio transmission noise. My Rode NT5s have worked flawlessly for years.

unbeleivable bang for the buck February 6, 2006
Reviewer: Jason Caffee from Columbia, SC United States
These mics are some of my new favorites! They are incredibly versatile.  I've used them on acoustic guitar and piano with excellent results on both.  The number of features you get with these is incredible. They are small and sturdy.  The highs are nice and shimmering. The lows aren't overpowering.  (there is a bass rolloff too, but I didn't really need it.)  There is also a 10db pad.  The omni caps sounded great on piano, and stomped a pair of SDCs costing twice as much.  These mics simply can't be beat in this price range!
