What We Think - Shure Beta 57A Review

The Shure Beta 57A is one of my workhorse mics. With me since the late 90??s my Beta 57 has been on guitar, vocal, and drum tracks, on many of sessions ?" and styles of music. It has a slightly darker character (in comparison to the SM57), and less honk to it. I really like its darker top end for lead guitars, and its mid fullness for hard rock, punk, and metal vocals. However, this has been my ??goto? snare mic for as long as I can remember. I get the majority of my snares attack from the overheads, so the fuller sound of the Beta 57 gives me the guts of the snare, and with the darker top and super cardioid pattern, hat bleed is minimal and easy to deal with. And like all Shure mics, this one is a tank. Misplace your hammer, and need to do some woodwork? The Beta 57 can be that substitute, and still track a killer snare, vocal, or guitar ?" the same day.

Great mic January 14, 2010
Reviewer: Phill Richardson from Columbia, SC United States
The Beta 57 is about as versatile of a mic as one can find.  With a little effort you can capture  almost endless numbers of sources.  Stick it on a guitar amp speaker, stick it near the neck/ body joint on a acoustic, stick it on a snare or high hat.  Heck, even try dropping one or two into a console piano.  Plus, it can hold it's own as a dynic vocal mic
