Sennheiser e901 Boundary Layer Condenser Microphone for Kick Drum

Sennheiser e901 Half Cardioid Boundary Layer Condenser Microphone

Sennheiser e901 Boundary Layer Condenser Microphone for Kick Drum Details

The Sennheiser e901 is a professional quality boundary layer condenser microphone which, unlike most other PZMs (pressure zone microphone), has been optimized for bass drum, the lower drum of a Leslie speaker, and other low frequency instrument applications. The boundary style microphone has been a trick of many a professional recording engineer over the years to help really capture the "slap" of the beater on the kick drum. However, the e901 can be quite good at capturing the whole picture of the kick drum from within. So, use it by itself or in conjunction with a more traditional kick drum mic. No stand is needed since the e901 can simply sit on top of a folded towel, pillow or whatever your regular padding is inside the drum.

Sennheiser e901 Boundary Layer Condenser Microphone for Kick Drum Features

  • Frequency response optimized for bass drum, Leslie cabinets (low rotor), and other low-frequency instruments
  • No stand needed -- just lay it on a towel or pillow
  • Standard XLR plug: no adapter cable needed
  • Capable of handling extremely high SPLs

What We Think - Sennheiser e901 Review

"The Sennheiser e901 is a fantastic tool for the recording engineer who likes options and who loves to experiment with new and interesting sounds. Though I have used it in live situations before (where it excelled), I did find it to be more suited for the recording studio where the front head of the kick might be removed or have a larger hole cut into the head - It's just a little bit too big (as are most PZM style mics) to fit through the regular "coffee can" sized hole in the kick head. So, don't say I didn't warn you that you'll need to be ready to futz with the front head of your kick when you order one! However, it is certainly well worth the trouble. Placing this heavy little sucker (built well enough to survive a nuclear strike) inside the drum on either a pillow, towel, or other padding, you'll suddenly have more options by which to tailor your kick drum sound. The fact that it is a condenser mic is proven by the added open top end. It's perfect for capturing the beater whacking the head while also getting the ooomph of the drum. Give it a try. It's a far more exciting new tool in your kit than 'another screwdriver'."

Definitely recommended!! February 7, 2011
Reviewer: Matthew Uribe from Lakewood, CO United States
I first got into PZM mic's while experimenting with the shure beta 91a and enjoyed the capturing of sound from inside the kick drum.  I bought this mic because of the reviews on other sites and the promise that Sennheiser has given me over several other purchases.  I love this mic!! It captures the snap of the beater and has plenty of body on the low end as well.  I have used this in conjunction with the Audix D6 and have never been happier with what both of these mics have to offer.  In some situations I'll use the recording from this mic on it's own and it gives plenty of sonic information for your sculpting pleasure with a very natural sound. The Audix D6 has a punchier sound which is great for rock tunes, however, this mic can sound the same with the right eq and compression but also gives more options for more natural sounding styles of music.
