Roswell Aurora Condenser Microphone

The Roswell Aurora Condenser Microphone is the big brother of their Mini K47 microphone. Featuring cardioid and omni directional polar patterns, and more sensitivity, the Aurora offers an improved level of versatility - in a more energetic character, making it pair well with any sound source. The Aurora is another workhorse from Roswell.

The microphone uses a highly optimized transformerless circuit, which provides a pristine signal path. The microphone's circuit boards are manufactured and populated in the US, using the finest components sourced from around the world, including low-noise NOS transistors and imported European capacitors. Two switches located on the front of the microphone provide pattern control (Cardioid/Omni) and pad (-10dB).

Each Aurora is assembled in California, manually "burned in," and extensively tested after manufacturing to ensure the best possible performance. The transistors in the Aurora are all NOS parts, no longer made but ideal for this circuit. The JFET is selected for low input capacitance, then manually biased in our shop to maximize signal level without distortion. Every resistor in both the audio and DC power circuits is a low-noise metal film type with 1% tolerance. Competitors have told us this is overkill, but we see no point in compromising the microphone to save a few pennies. Special care was taken to select signal-path capacitors for the best sound. Even the non-signal-path parts are upgraded, non-microphonic NP0 types.

What We Think

The Roswell Aurora is a solid mic. It's natural character allow it to be a workhorse that just plain works with virtually any sound source (very much like their Mini K47). However, I find it to be quite different, and pleasingly so. The Aurora has a bit more of a forward sound, just a little more life/energy to it. Also the Aurora has a slight bit more clarity to the top end (the Mini K47 is a little softer in the top). Though the Aurora has more clarity in the top, it is still a very balanced sound - between the clarity and body it gives. Then, you switch it to omni and are surprised all over again. The mic becomes more open and relaxed sounding, but maintains the balance. The Aurora has definitely impressed me on stringed acoustic instruments - from acoustic guitar, to mandolin, and one of my favorites - mountain dulcimer.
