Does what you expect, but it is a hum magnet |

I agree with the house review of the 5042-H Portico: this device corrects 'digital syndrome', "gluing" together tracks in a mix and making them sound as if they exist in one palpable sonic space. Sonically, this device delivers the goods. And it is great for tracking, too.
But the 5042-H Portico is very sensitive to hum. The user manual alludes to this. A professional studio may not encounter this problem. However in my tiny home studio setup I learned by trial and error that the 5042-H will add audible hum to the signal path if it is within a few feet of my power strip. (Increasing the saturation value reduces hum, but one doesn't always want maximum saturation, and it isn't a complete cure.) I am still searching for a hum-free location; and for now my investment in the 1-unit rackmount adapter is wasted.
That aside, I am glad I bought the 5042-H. It really does give me a quick and reliable fix for the cold, unmusical sonics of the digital recording medium I can afford to use.
