Phoenix Audio DRS-1 Microphone Preamp Details

With the Phoenix DRS-1, a single channel, half rack-width, mono Pre/DI, Phoenix Audio follows up on from the huge success of the DRS-2, 2-channel microphone pre-amplifier/DI. The DRS-1 Mic-Pre/DI uses their well proven and loved Class A output stage (DSOP-2), but also has Phoenix's latest breakthrough in transformerless Class A, Discrete Mic Input Technology which gives a "valve-like" sound. It also incorporates their high input impedance DI circuitry.

What We Think - Phoenix Audio DRS-1 Review

"The Phoenix Audio preamp is a unique design that combines two design techniques that are essentially polar opposites from one another on opposite ends of the signal path. Input is transformerless for a clean and undistorted image of what is being presented by the microphone. This contributes to a nice and open sound - something akin (practically indistinguishable from the Forssell pre). However, the Class A stage complete with large output transformer is much like that which you would find in a vintage Neve preamplifier/EQ module - seems fitting seeing that designer Shaun Leveque's history is mainly servicing pre-1980 Neve consoles. However, it's important to note that it's not a Neve in sound. It's a delightfully different sound. More open and dimensional in a way... think of it as having the front-to-back dimension of a tube circuit while also having the ability to lean on the output transformer more to gain a little softer saturation to sweeten the sound up some. The trick is to start with the input knob (the stepped, large knob) all the way down and adjust the output (small knob) to taste. Rarely if ever will you run the input set higher than three... at least that's what I've found in my experience. But within that range you'll have brought more signal through the circuit to rest on the output transformer, thus resulting in more lush tones. Adjust the input a click or two to either enhance or decrease it's affect on the original signal. This basic design tenets follow throughout the whole of the Phoenix line where the DSOP-2 Class-A output stage is the key to the Phoenix Audio sonic signature. A wonderful sounding preamplifier for anyone looking for big open tracks that you are looking to feature, the Phoenix Audio DRS-1 is a must-have addition to your studio."
