"Native Instruments' MASCHINE is STRONG. It's open and easily to update architecture means to that Native Instruments will constantly be making MASCHINE better and better. Plus you can continue to expand your sample library either by making your own samples easily, and/or with MASCHINE expansions. In a world where the lines have blurred between where samplers and MIDI production devices have traditionally been used and where stringed and skinned instruments are played, MASCHINE integrates into the traditional musicians' environment without much fuss or investment. The creative possibilities are endless and the sonic palette is expanded. It's definitely worth checking out if you're wanting to spice up your arrangements or find a way to create unique rhythm tracks, trigger sound effects, and more."

I am traditionally a rock guitarist who has picked this up to replace a missing drummer.  In the process of learning the maschine, I would recommend doing tutorials, i have developed a pretty good feel for fingerdrumming and find it really fun.  So much that we are working this into our live set.  On top of that, the sounds are great, its completely expandable with NI other products, it samples as well.  My only problem is that you have to hook it up to a computer at all times, which makes it a little less easy to setup live.  But the hassle is worth it.

This thing is a powerhouse of beat-making delight! The hardware controller is solid and the pads feel more responsive than an MPC. To each their own, I suppose.

While I haven't delved into all the features this software/hardware combo offers, I will say that I haven't yet found any important feature in the software that I couldn't control from the hardware. This is a big plus as you can focus on making music rather than clicking at things on a screen. The unit also doubles as a MIDI controller!

The only downside I can think of is that there is a learning curve involved. The hardware controls are quite daunting and deep until you are familiar with how the unit operates. I have yet to feel 100% comfortable with it, but I'm getting there.
