Little Labs VOG 500-Series Analog Bass Resonance Tool Details

The Little Labs VOG 500-Series Analog Bass Resonance Tool is one of the latest creations from Little Labs, and is Little Labs first entry in the popular API 500-Series module format.

The VOG was originally designed to capture the chest resonance of vocalists or voice over artists, enabling them to still have a proximity type effect without having to be so close to the mic, hence the name, VOG, or "Voice Of God". However, when Jonathan Little first heard it on kick drum and bass, it became clear to him that this would be the go to device to make these instruments sound huge.

The VOG lets users sweep a sharp peak resonance from 20 to 300 Hz, while anything below the peak is rolled off at a steep -24dB per octave. This lets users focus on the low end they want, while eliminating low-end mush and unnecessary woofer excursion.

A subharmonic can be the focus, or the fundamental, or upper harmonics. On a kick drum, for example, the overall effect of turning VOGs frequency knob sounds like someone is tightening or loosening the drum-head. In a mix, VOG allows users to place the bass spectrum instruments so they do not interfere or get in the way of each other.

The Little Labs i-VOG is identical to the VOG, but it's a standalone version, no rack required. Oh, but it does add a high quality hi-Z instrument input (3.32 meg ohm), which adds to its creative capability.

Little Labs VOG 500-Series Analog Bass Resonance Tool Features

  • 500-Series Module for Analog Purists
  • All audio stays BALANCED from input through to the output - again, for Analog Purists
  • VOG can be operated in both MONO (balanced) or STEREO (unbalanced) ***Stereo operation requires a Y-cable with source XLRs wired Pin 1 to Ground, Pin 2 Left and Pin 3 Right on the sending XLR (basically this is a standard cable for Pin 2 Hot configurations)
  • 24dB per octave drop below the boost frequency
  • 3 center frequency ranges of 40, 100, and 200 Hz

What We Think

"The Little Labs VOG 500-Series Analog Bass Resonance Tool is a problem solver of the highest order and one certainly worthy of the Little Labs name! If you've had any experience with the supremely awesome Little Labs LMNOPre, the Low frequency resonance control provides a clue as to the origins of the VOG. However, due to the increased flexibility via 3 separate center frequency ranges (40, 100, and 200 Hz), the VOG isn't just for fine tuning the chest resonance on a wider variety of voices. In fact, it's a device that has the uncanny ability to transform of a recorded kick drum into a completely other that works better with the track as a whole. Jonathan describes the VOG as having the same effect as tightening or loosening the lugs on the kick. I agree - but one of the frequency ranges is probably going to have more overall effect on this than the others. The others sound more like moving the microphone around within the shell of the drum - accentuating more of the space within and perhaps the angle of the microphone. Bass guitars will benefit from this as well, helping to bring up notes that can be lost without resorting to heavy (or more) compression and the resulting loss of dynamic range. In fact, the standalone i-VOG, with it's additional Hi-Z instrument input and DI output, makes for a great room-tuning device for overcoming acoustic issues that result in dead-spots on the stage. And the fully-balanced signal path of the VOG allows it to also be used in STEREO (unbalanced) operation. It's a great way to tune in and bring more of a specific instrument out of a stereo recording - so, mastering, anyone? The VOG propels Little Labs yet again to the forefront of innovative problem solving, while also being the coolest and most useful tools in the rack."

The VOG is a cool little module, hard to pinpoint exactly what it does to the signal but certainly makes things sound better just by running thru it and turning the knobs.

For the price it's worth having in your rack, even if you are like me and don't use it as often as you should.
