The Gefell UM92.1S is a vintage large-diaphragm multi-pattern tube microphone. It is equipped with the original M7 capsule. This pressure gradient transducer features a dual-membrane, gold evaporated PVC capsule that is still hand-made in the Gefell factory following the 75-year tradition. The Gefell UM92.1S is the choice for those that want the true sound and character of the original Neumann-Gefell UM57 with the added benefit of improved reliability and lower noise. The UM92 exhibits high sensitivity, excellent signal-to-noise ratio and it has the full sound, tube warmth, and character that are favored by singers and soloists.

Gefell UM92.1S Development
Right from the start in 1928, the Gefell engineering team established a single goal of building the very best microphone possible. This meant developing new processes and materials that would one day culminate in the famous M7 one-inch (25mm), 24 karat gold evaporated PVC diaphragm. But just as before, off-the-shelf materials such as the unique PVC membrane that is used in the M7 cannot be purchased. These must be manufactured from scratch. It is for this reason that all other manufacturers have opted for readily available, off-the-shelf polyethylene (Mylar) substrates as an alternative.
During the 1950s, the Gefell built Neumann UM57 was introduced as the worlds 1st multi-pattern tube microphone and eventually reworked with 110V operation as the Neumann UM67 for the North American market. The UM57 remained virtually unchanged during the communist years, and in 1990s, after Germany?s Reunification, an updated version called the Gefell UM92.1S was introduced that featured lower noise and improved sensitivity to better adapt to todays higher recording standards.
Gefell still manufactures the M7 capsule using PVC in order to retain the natural characteristics that make the UM92 a truly unique microphone. Each M7 capsule is hand-selected for optimum frequency and polar response. The result is a softer and rounder rendering that smoothes out the voice producing unmatched warmth that truly sets the Gefell UM92 apart. |
