The TC30 (same as TC30K) is a general-purpose omni. It is an ideal choice for close miking louder sources like guitar, bass, piano, horns and percussion. The TC30 is very popular for drum overheads. It is incredibly clean up to 150 dB SPL while simultaneously capturing subtle details. Its fast, clean impulse performance yields a remarkably transparent sound. It is an excellent room mic for ambiance in the studio and for recording rehearsals and performances. It has no handling noise, no proximity effect and is very forgiving in terms of placement.
The Earthworks TC30 is one the most accurate microphones available. It is optimized to deliver clean impulse response and is time coherent on the microsecond level. Earthworks TC30 utilizes a very small, very accurate omni directional capsule, a carefully crafted stainless steel body and innovative circuitry to deliver time coherent response from 9Hz to 30kHz.
We contend that this extended response is essential for capturing sonic events accurately, more truly capturing the experience of live sound. For example, a kick drum creates a body slam of subsonic frequency. True, we can't hear that wave as a tone but clearly it is part of the experience of hearing the drum. We suggest that there is also important impulsive information embedded in the wave which requires better than 20K resolution to capture. With respect to "supersonic" frequencies, reputable persons, such as Rupert Neve, have suggested that many people can "hear" a difference between recordings bandlimited from 20 to 20K compared to recordings with a wider frequency range. It is well established that humans have time resolution in the 5 microsecond range. This implies that response beyond the 20Hz to 20kHz range plays a part in the perception of complex sounds which contain impulsive information. Regardless of your beliefs on this matter or the frequency response of your recorder, Earthworks microphones deliver sonic clarity and definition which you can hear-accuracy beyond what words can describe. We have had numerous instances of very experienced engineers and producers choosing our microphones in blind A/B tests over all their best mics (B+K, AKG, Neumann, Schoeps).
The TC30 captures the full size and natural texture of many difficult sources. They are excellent for applications where natural, uncolored sound is desired and the SPL level is moderate to extremely high. They are awesome for Piano, Upright Bass, Drum Overheads, Kick Drum, Acoustic and Electric Guitar, Brass, Vocals (Chorus and Solo, if the voice is good enough), Instrumental Ensembles and Location Recording. If you need a microphone to double for measurement, the TC30K is unsurpassed in it's price range.Even if your current system is only good from 20 to 20K the TC30 still delivers noticeably better sonic clarity and definition. Although its self noise is relatively high people seem to feel that this is a factor which they can live with for most applications considering the quality of the THE SOUND!
