| Daking Mic Pre One Details Sharing the gain structure and Class A, fully discrete transistor circuitry design of the popular Daking Mic Pre IV, the Mic Pre One additionally features a unique variable high-pass filter and ships in a freestanding 'DI-style' steel enclosure, ensuring both strength and noise immunity.
Essentially a single channel of the Mic Pre IV, the Mic Pre One features switchable phase, 20dB mic input pad and +48V phantom power, plus a selectable 1/4-inch line/hi-z instrument input, all utilizing relays with gold bi-furcated contacts. Two large knurled aluminum knobs control the variable high-pass filter (0-200Hz) and continuously variable input gain, which is complemented by a full-width, twenty-segment bi-color LED meter. The rear of the unit offers a Jensen transformer-isolated mic input and fully-balanced XLR output, plus a 1/4-inch line output. A fourth connector introduces DC power from the external power supply to the unit.

What We Think
"Geoff Daking has always had a way with excellent equipment design - especially since he utilizes gold bi-furcated relays throughout his designs to shorten the signal path. With the Mic Pre One, he has put his much sought after sound in the hands of the project studio owner on a budget. Daking preamps and channel strips are known for their zing in the presence range, which makes them a favorite for drum recording; and the Mic Pre One is no exception. It's housed in a super-sturdy housing that would probably survive a nuclear strike. The knobs and switches all have a solid feel, though the metering might take a minute to get used to. All in all, the Mic Pre One has become one of our best sellers in this relatively new form factor. Folks looking to accumulate more than one of these might be better served with the Daking four channel pre, however. The price per channel in that unit makes it one of the best deals in pro-audio. But for someone who needs just one good preamp, the Mic Pre One is hard to beat."
