The TS-1 MKII is a small diaphragm tube condenser microphone, unique in design, and versatile in application. Driven by newly designed vacuum tube electronics and utilizing a U.S. made MIL-Spec 5840 NOS tube, the TS-1 MKII provides an unmatched combination of sparkle and warmth without the overly bright sonic qualities of other leading pencil condensers. The power supply's unique adjustable Heater Voltage control customizes the tube to allow tailoring of the microphone to your tonal requirements. A precision voltage meter provides repeatability. Note: The Chameleon Labs TS-1 MKII now includes the TS1-L Large Diaphragm Capsule!

Chameleon Labs TS-1 MKII Small Diaphragm Tube Microphone Applications

The TS-1 MKII is excellent for accurately capturing a wide variety of instruments including stringed, percussion, wind instruments, and more. This microphone responds extremely well to transients. It performs flawlessly when recording toms and snares, or being used as an overhead pair.

Included with the TS-1 MKII are three interchangeable capsules, one cardioid, an omni, and a large diaphragm TS1-L. The cardioid capsule is best used when you desire to pick up specific sound sources, such as one guitar within an ensemble. The omni capsule is used when you wish to pick up a wider area, such as a group of instruments. The large diaphragm TS1-L capsule has a 1-inch diameter, gold sputtered diaphragm that is 3-microns thick. It is switchable between cardioid and omni, and will transform the TS-1 MKII into a warm, vocal or bass instrument microphone.

The TS-1 MKII is a plate loaded, triode-strapped, pentode design using a MIL SPEC NOS 5840 tube. With its capsules designed to withstand up to 130dB SPL, the TS-1 MKII can be used in very loud sonic environments without significant distortion.

I have a small home studio, and I mainly record guitars.
A friend recommended this mic as a great value, low cost
and with a quality rivaling better known, twice-as-expensive
mics.

I've used it to record two cd projects, on a Collings acoustic
guitar.  The (famous) mixer and master both praised the
recording - and asked what the mic was that I used.

Great on Drum Overheads March 5, 2009

Recently used a set of these for drum overheads, through a Trident into Protools HD.

Nice, full sound without ever being brash on the high end.

Overall, great value for the money.

As a small project studio owner I have started to put together a collection of decent mid-priced condensor mics (Rode K2, Earthworks TC-20's), Octava MK12, Marshall V69, etc.).

With the possible exception of the Rode the TS-1 has become the favorite mic here for vocals and acoustic instruments. I have tried it on fiddle and mandolin to and it sounds fantastic.  

Paired with the Safe Sounds Audio P1 preamp (thanks for the suggestion, War!), the vocals are sweet and clear. The tube in the TS-1 adds just enough warmth without sounding too midrangey.  Definitely worth the money. Sounds better to me than the Neumann KM84 that I borrowed for acoustic guitar.
