    What We Think
The M179 is a superb all purpose mic. It’s not a bright mic, it’s not a bass heavy mic, it’s pretty much even up and down the spectrum. It's fantastic on drum overheads, talk about a big sound! M179’s are priced so right using them for toms makes sense too, and they sound good on many vocals, guitar cabs, acoustic instruments…everyone should have at least one (OK two) M179’s in their mic locker! The completely variable pattern is a strong attribute as well. We use them in our studio every day and love them.

    What's Not To Like? November 16, 2009
Reviewer: S Jansen - Moonroom Recording from United States
The M179 is probably the biggest "bang for your buck" mic that there is.  Comes in it's own hardshell case, with both solid mount and spider mount included!  For the most part, these mics are FLAT.  That is to say that they don't have artificial presence peaks built in to make them "vocal mics" or "kick drum mics" or what-have-you.  They reproduce whatever sound is in front of them - exceptionally well.  I often use them for vocals, using proximity effect to get a bit fuller, rounder tone.  The "older/better" M179's were made in USA - newer ones are made in China, where quality control seems to be more lax than it was here in the States: I had to go through three returns to get an M179 with both front and back capsules working, and with switches that did not crackle...However, the other three M179's I had bought previously, worked perfectly right out of the box.  Just do a full check of your mic when you get it, just in case.  These mics are real workhorses - really worth having!

Versatile, workhouse mic March 3, 2009
Reviewer: Ian Anderson from Greensburg, PA United States
This microphone is a great choice for a home recordist on a budget like myself.  The continuously variable pickup pattern is a great feature that allows you to tighten up or widen the pattern across a large range.
I like to tighten up the pattern when I use it, because the rooms I record in are generally not very nice sounding.
The shockmount and carrying case that are included are very high quality for such a budget price.  You can't go wrong with this one - there's almost nothing it can't handle.

    Suprise January 5, 2008
Reviewer: Jason Bradley from Hillsboro, OR United States
I was suprised by this mic.  It does everything pretty well.  Mostly, though, the low end is amazing - on bass cabinets and hand drums (haven't tried it on a kick yet) it has bottom end for days.  You really need a shock mount with this mic if you don't use the roll-off switch.

It worked well in a MS choir recording when paired with a M177 (you could use another 179 too).  It was a bit too flat, but a little EQ and the recording was rich and warm and articulate.

For the price, everyone should have one or two.

2007's best value for the money January 5, 2007
Reviewer: Louis-Philippe Kyer from Blainville, QC Canada
I just borrowed this mic from a friend for a session. It's amazing. You can use it on every instruments, it will always sound superb. The pad and capsule patterns are very useful and I never hesitate to use them. If it'd be written Sennheiser on it, it could sell for 800$. It's that good.
