CAD M179 Dual Diaphragm Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone Details

There isn't another microphone on the market and at the same price point that can compete with the CAD M179. This microphone is a workhorse and everyone should have one if not two of them in their mic locker! We use the CAD M179 everyday in the studio on drums, acoustic guitar, cabs and vocals. Really, we would be hard pressed to find an application that the M179 did not excel on.

The M179 is a true variable pattern microphone. Simply dial in a pattern or experience all the variations in between! The figure-of-eight pattern is rich and intimate and the omnidirectional pattern is spacious and articulate. CAD combined the large-diaphragm capsule with algebraic phasing and high-power transformerless drive to create an indispensable acoustical window. Additional features include a hi-pass filter and attenuator.

The M179 comes with a heavy duty carry case, a swivel mount, and a elastic shock mount. At Front End Audio we even go a step further and throw in a free CAD popfiler and XLR cable.

    What We Think

The M179 is a superb all purpose mic. It’s not a bright mic, it’s not a bass heavy mic, it’s pretty much even up and down the spectrum. It's fantastic on drum overheads, talk about a big sound! Try them toms, wow! The M179 is priced so right so your not going to break the bank outfitting your kit. They sound good on many vocals, guitar cabs, acoustic instruments…everyone should have at least one (OK two) M179’s in their mic locker! The completely variable pattern is a strong attribute as well. We use them in our studio every day and love them.

Comes in Handy for Live Sound July 5, 2010
Reviewer: David Hoover from Sebastian, FL United States
I'm glad these guys recommended this mic for my needs.  I first tried it on percussion.  The band was so large at the church we ran out of mics, so I used this mic for percussion.  I actually used a figure of eight pattern.  The bottom picked up djembe and the top shakers, maracas, etc.  Nice.  No monitor feedback either!  It sounds more natural than an SM27 on acoustic guitar.  It's better than an sm57 on guitar cabs (way better).  The 57 colors the cabs too much.  The 179 actually sounds like the source you put it on.  I even used this when I only had two channels to pick up a drum kit. Kick, then the 179 on OH.  Snare, toms, and symbols were adequately heard in the mix with minimal EQing.  I would do it again if I needed to.

Bang for the buck! June 28, 2010
Reviewer: John S. Trageser from Murfreesboro, TN United States
Another solid performer at the price range. I've only had time to try it on guitar amps so far, but it hasn't disappointed. It had a bit more low mids in the frequency response (and hence more body on the guitar amp) than the Studio Projects B-series, but it didn't get muddy as long as I started with decent placement.

One characteristic you might want to know: the protective case they send it in is HUGE! It's a molded plastic box about 6" x 8" with cut-out foam that does a great job of protecting the mic and the shockmount.

Not sure what to make of it yet, but it's good June 23, 2010
Reviewer: Gabriel from Seattle, WA United States
This is an amazing value, and while it doesn't feel particularly well-made (two halves riveted together with cheesy plastic switches), with its continuously variable pickup pattern it can be useful for pretty much any sound you'd want to record. And it sounds good, with plenty of its own character. It's less lively but possibly more realistic than a Rode NT1a. I bought a pair primarily for toms, but they sounds respectable, not harsh, on vocals, guitar, and upright piano as well. However, a fair level of hum is produced when using the pickup pattern wheel, and I've had problems with a faint background hum when recording highly-compressed quiet sounds. None of my other LDCs have given me problems with hum. Luckily there is a two-year warranty, so if hum gets any worse I'll be in OK shape.

I couldn't settle for just one of these-- its a beautiful all-around mic that sounds especially smooth on vocals.

    CAD M179 May 30, 2010
Reviewer: Peter Young from Boxford, MA United States
I have owned these and other CAD mics through the years. Let's see, a continuously variable pattern and a nice even response up and down. A no brainer. I own 2 of these and I think over the years I have used them on just about everything I can think of. A great all purpose mic.
