CAD M179 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone Details

The CAD M179 microphone is a pure workhorse condenser microphone. There is not another condenser on the market that has the features and performance of close to the M179 at this price point. With its full response, clear neutral sound, and completely variable polar patterns, the M179 is the definition of "bang for the buck." You can put one in front of anything and get a great sounding track. We use the CAD M179 everyday in the studio on drums, acoustic guitar, cabs and vocals. Really, we would be hard pressed to find an application that the M179 did not excel on.

The M179 is a true and completely variable pattern microphone. Simply dial in a pattern or experience all the variations in between! From the rich and intimate sounding figure-of-eight pattern to the spacious and articulate omnidirectional, you can dial in the space you want on any sound source. CAD combined the large-diaphragm capsule with algebraic phasing and high-power transformerless drive to create an indispensable acoustical window. Additional features include a hi-pass filter and attenuator.

The CAD M179 comes with a durable carry/storage case, a swivel mount, and a elastic shock mount. Here at Front End Audio, we even go a step further and throw in a free CAD popfiler and XLR cable.

What We Think - CAD M179 Review

The M179 is a great all purpose mic. I like to refer to them as the SM57s of Condenser Mics. It has a clean and neutral sound that makes them great on any sound source. It's fantastic on drum overheads, one of the main applications I use them on. The M179’s are priced so right using them for toms is a no-brainer (see our FEA multi-packs), and they sound good on many vocals, guitar cabs, (great on) acoustic instruments…everyone should own a pair! The completely variable pattern is a strong attribute as well. My pair is on every recording session I do.

Great for the price. Its great having a mic with a variable polar patter. You can really dial in for the room. It does however hum when you touch the selector switch. I would definitely still recommend because of the price.

These are great mics for Drums.  They are known for toms because of the hypercardioid setting but try them on overheads!
