Aphex 142 8-Channel AD Converter Details
The Aphex 141, 142 and 144 were developed as interfaces between the Aphex Anaconda digital snake system and other devices. Each model was designed to do its job without any extra unnecessary bells or whistles. While they each fulfill that design specification, each model is an excellent, useful product in it own right.

Since the I/O of the Anaconda is ADAT, there is an ADAT connection in each model. The ADAT eight channel format has been a standard in the audio industry for years. It is a reliable, mature, cost effective technology albeit with limitations. The prime limitation is the distance that ADAT audio can be safely transmitted through ‘Lightpipe’ fiber. Some claim that it could be as far as 30 feet, but our experience shows that there can be significant audible artifacts at 20 feet. We strongly recommend that the distance be as short as possible, preferably less than 10 feet (3 meters).

The other limitation is that the Aphex 142's maximum sample rate is 48kHz for eight channel operation. There is a technology called S-Mux that doubles the maximum frequency but halves the channel count. Aphex have elected to stay with the sample rate of 48kHz in the Model 142, but Models 141 and 144 can work at 44.1 or 48kHz.

There are many other products on the market that do similar functions. But none as simply or as well or as cost effectively, as these units. You will enjoy many years of excellent uninterrupted performance.

What We Think
"Aphex makes great stuff!  The 142 basically provides a utilitarian and very basic configuration of an 8-Channel AD converter in a half rack space housing.  When I say that it's basic, it's pretty basic, meaning that you're confined to using it at 48k ONLY and it only offers ADAT outputs. However, there are nice little line trims on the front panel, which is more control over alignment than some much more expensive converters offer.  Like most every much more expensive converter, it will require an 8-Channel DA88-style D-Sub (Tascam standard) breakout cable in order to get analog signals into the unit. Match it up with the 141 DA converter for 8 channels of output from your recorder."

Good Entry Level Converter August 20, 2008

This is a compact unit with  simple setup and useful features.

We hooked the 142 to a MOTU 896 for 8 more channels to our recording needs. You WILL need mic pres on the front end of the Aphex. It is a converter not a preamp. We used the db25 connector on the back to hook up the pres. Quick and easy. From there ADAT optical to the MOTU then Firewire into the computer.

We ran Focusrite Green Ones into the converter. They have lots of headroom. The converter was set at 48k and 16 bit rate.

It handles everything well but monitor overages to avoid distortion. You work with the gain on the pres and the input gain on the Aphex for ample signal to the recording rig. We are using Sonar 7.

We recorded Bass and Guitar and drum OHs and room mics through the 142. Nice signal that is mostly quiet and clean. We got a good loud signal printed to HDD with little coloration except from the pres All pres are colored.

In short this is a great little product and worth every single penny.

Thank you for your feedback on this review. We appreciate your input!
