This is a compact unit with simple setup and useful features.
We hooked the 142 to a MOTU 896 for 8 more channels to our recording needs. You WILL need mic pres on the front end of the Aphex. It is a converter not a preamp. We used the db25 connector on the back to hook up the pres. Quick and easy. From there ADAT optical to the MOTU then Firewire into the computer.
We ran Focusrite Green Ones into the converter. They have lots of headroom. The converter was set at 48k and 16 bit rate.
It handles everything well but monitor overages to avoid distortion. You work with the gain on the pres and the input gain on the Aphex for ample signal to the recording rig. We are using Sonar 7.
We recorded Bass and Guitar and drum OHs and room mics through the 142. Nice signal that is mostly quiet and clean. We got a good loud signal printed to HDD with little coloration except from the pres All pres are colored.
In short this is a great little product and worth every single penny.
