    APEX 205 Details
The microphone is the first, and arguably the most important link the signal chain. In the world where digital recording is now the most common recording media, it is more important than ever that you choose a microphone that is able to capture every subtle nuance of your source material.

The compact Apex205 has been designed with today's direct-to-drive digital recording systems in mind. Its classic ribbon element delivers a warm tone and the most natural sound reproduction available from virtually any style of studio microphone.

The active element of a ribbon microphone is a very thin corrugated aluminum ribbon mounted under low tension between the poles of a strong magnet. The low-tension 2-inch long, 2-micron thick aluminum ribbon used in the Apex205 offers audio reproduction with smooth, natural extended low and high frequency response, yet handles extremely fast transients accurately. Although ribbon microphones are by their nature extremely fragile, the Apex205 can handle high sound pressure levels approaching 165dB range.

The asymmetrical figure-8 pickup pattern has an extended sweet spot on the rear face of the microphone allowing the recording to accurately reproduce the natural space and ambient reverberation of a good sounding live room.

The integrated yoke mic stand mount and internal shock mount assembly protects the fragile ribbon element during use.

Cheap way to end up with a really good Ribbon Mic! August 12, 2010
Reviewer: Jason Dickerson from Tustin, CA United States
Ribbon mics are simple beasts... a couple magnets, a strip of corrugated aluminum, a transformer & of course, a housing to put all of it in... that's all there is to a ribbon mic. I was lucky that my Apex 205 arrived sounding great, no ribbon re-tension needed! If you've got ham-hocks for hands don't attempt this... you need the gentle touch of a swiss watch maker to mess with the ribbon. You also might want to upgrade the transformer... a lot of people do. If you get the ribbon tensioned & a new $60-$70 transformer put in an Apex 205 you can turn a $100 mic into a mic that performs & sounds like a ribbon mic costing 5-10 times more. Plus, if you're not comfy doin' the mods just do a quick google search about them. Remember, THESE MODS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY! Don't get me wrong with all the mod talk, The Apex 205 is a great bang for your buck purchase right out of the box, buy one or two NOW!

    Not bad January 14, 2010
Reviewer: Jay from Troy, NH United States
These are not bad out of the box but with some easy mods(do a online search) there great. Great warm tone with just enough of the room sound. Work great for me on acoustic instruments, guitar cabs, drums (overhead and room). They can be a little noisy on quiet sources if you dont match them to a pre with some good gain. For the price you can't go wrong.

    Can't Beat the Price March 3, 2009
Reviewer: Chuck Hutcheson from Mc Rae, GA United States
I just purchased two Apex 205 ribbon mics with the intention of having them professionally modified.  I was in the middle of a session and decided to give them a try before I sent them off.  Honestly, I was very impressed.  I played trumpet, tenor and baritone saxes, and I got a really good, fat sound from the one mic I used (I kept the other one in the box.)  I wouldn't hesitate at all to purchase another at this price.  I have a small project studio, and I've never used a ribbon mic, so really I have no experience comparing ribbons.  However, I was very pleased with the SOUND, and that's the important thing, right?  With the bari sax, I pulled off a really kickin' solo, with nice highs, mids & lows, with a big fat low 'A' that I hit a couple of times during a solo section.  I'm going to have these mics modified anyway, but at this price am considering getting another to keep as a spare.  Used a Presonus D8 into my 002 Rack via light pipe.  Great for the price.

    great potential February 12, 2009
Reviewer: David Rainville from Moncks Corner, SC
Purchased for M/S paired with a single SDC omni. If you are handy and need a ribbon, this is a bargain. After opening, these are obviously assembled in haste but the materials are worth more than the price. After a quick re-build I had a solid, fully symmetrical figure of eight with a very open high end.  I upgraded the tran and went back to OE unit. My setup uses 150 ft before a VLZ mixer and low level wind instruments dozens of feet from the mics, so it is admittedly a challenge, but I would expect the same with any ribbon. To be fair, a simple vocal or guitar cab setup these should work very well out of the box.
