For little money, the Apex 205 adds an incredible tool to your arsenal. A very capable ribbon with great potential when placed carefully. I appreciate the extended high end response the 205 has compared to the shorter ribbon designs. I planned to mod these mics with a new transformer and ribbon but to be honest out of the box I am enjoying them on room, overheads, and trumpet duties. They are warm but have enough detail in the high mids for most things.

I've used it as Drum room mic, Guitar cab, acoustic Git and vocals. It sounds warmer than I thought it would. I may MOD it to get more high end response - but I'm new to ribbon mics. It works well as a secondary mic to warm the mids and lows. It's need to be paired with a mic that catches more high end.

Great sounding mic for the money |

For under a hundred bucks you get a great, warm sounding ribbon mic that has enough high end for vocals without the sibilance of some condenser mics. This is a long ribbon/ short path motor in a figure eight configuration. The response is very close for the front and the back sides, which should work well in a Mid/Side configuration. It takes EQ nicely and sounds very smooth. The output is a little low, so you need a good quiet preamp with at least 60db of gain. I run mine through a Universal Audio LA610MKII with great results.
Use an isolated shock mount as the standard mount that's included will transfer a lot of unwanted handling noise.
I bought two of these and there is a slight difference in sound between the two, probably due to tensioning tolerances of the ribbons.
Definetely worth it for this price!

Apex 205, A very powerful & inexpensive Ribbon Mic |

Being that I now own 5 of these mics, I feel that I have a pretty good handle on what they can do.
On my first mic, I took the advice of a lot of people and upgraded the transformer, but by not having 2 mics at the same time, I could only assume the upgrade was that much more improved. But once I got my 2nd mic, I heard a marginal difference and have not upgraded the other 4 mics! The mics are a bit on the "darker side" which is the nature of ribbons. I have used them on several electric guitar tracks, acoustic tracks, over heads, and female vocals with great results every time. Even a kick drum, with a pop filter of course! Little to no eq'ing used on each track.
Just recently did a session with a grammy winning producer who has a Royer endorsement. We ended up using the 205 and his comment was "how much is that mic?!" I then bought 4 more!

Everyone should have one of these |

Everyone should have at least one ribbon mic in their collection. This baby is magic. Like all ribbon has a smooth top end that is great on everything for vox, to drum overheads and even guitar cabs.. However, be prepared to tighten the ribbon when you 1st get it. This involves opening it up and gently using a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol bring some tension back into the ribbon.
