AEA RPQ 2-Channel Ribbon Microphone Preamplifier Details
The AEA RPQ with Curve Shaping and
48-volt phantom
power puts all the controls for any ribbon microphone (passive AND active) at your fingertips: 80 dB of clean quiet JFET gain, P48 phantom power for active studio ribbons such as AEA’s A440, and LF trim and HF boost contols that are tuneable and defeatable so that you can tame proximity problems and/or add a little more to the top.
The RPQ has the speed, quietness, and headroom needed for high resolution ribbon recordings, and it sounds good with condenser and moving coil mics. AEA’s DC-coupled JFET topology delivers all the dynamics, subwoofer bass and fast transients that your ribbon and other mics are capable of. Its discrete front end and integrated circuit architecture meld the quietness of solid state with an openness reminiscent of tubes.
Live and location recording is another area where the RPQ shines. Its
Low-Energy-Storage
(
LES
) circuitry recovers instantly from overloads, a big advantage with unpredicatable dynamics, and its exceptional
No Load
input impedance of over 10,000 Ù makes it an ideal active mic splitter. Mic splits usually load down, changing a mic’s sound, but not the RPQ.

What We Think
"With the AEA RPQ, Wes Dooley has given us all we need, short of any possible compression, that we would ever need in the realm of tone shaping for ribbon microphones. I found the preamplifier section of the RPQ to basically be a clean gain powerhouse that doesn't bloat the lows of a ribbon. This of course is not achieved by a filter network, but rather by Wes' understanding of impedence ratios between the ribbon mic output and the nominal operating impedance of a preamplifier. Bascially, where most preamps are working at around 1.5k Ohms, both the TRP and the RPQ have impedances of 18,000 Ohms. The result is a smooth and even frequency response from top to bottom of the spectrum and the mic has more life to it! Goodbye Murky Ribbon Mic Monday, I say. Not totally impressed by the ribbons you've bought in the past? It's not their fault - give them the right preamplifier! The equalizer section consists of a sweepable high-pass filter for taming the lows and a sweepable high frequency shelving band. Actually, the high frequency band is actually a bell-curve (that sounds more like a belle-curve) that operates well above the audible frequency spectrum. The owners manual documents this well with an included frequency response chart. When it's all said and done, the RPQ is a total tone shaping package for ribbon microphones, but also works well with ANY microphone. The separate XLR inputs on the rear (phantom power isolated [or NO possibility of phantom] and then +48 Phantom Optional inputs) protects any old ribbons that may have damaged cabling that would not cancel out the +48 voltage on the line, while also allowing you to use the RPQ with your condenser and dynamic mic collections. Still, you'll find that the equalizer is tailored specifically for the normal problem areas of ribbons. I was very, very happy with the sounds I got pairing the R88 stereo ribbon up with the RPQ. In fact, I miss that pair so much that I'm saving every day to one day fill the void in my life!"
