The A Designs Pacifica Microphone Preamp brings back the sound of the Quad Eight console of the '70s! If you're a studio that can only afford one really good preamp, give the A Designs Pacifica some serious consideration.

The A Designs Pacifica Microphone Preamp brings back the sound of the Quad Eight console of the '70s! What we're going to do is go back... WAY back! ...back into time... to the early 1970s, when the recording industry was starting to bloom with the new technology of solid state. (Dig?) Hit products were pumped out as fast as hit records - one after another. There was a creative industry within the audio world. It was, without question, a golden age. Some companies that emerged during that period were Neve, API, and Quad Eight. Although it's been decades, the benchmarks they set are still held as industry standards today. If you're a studio that can only afford one really good preamp, give the A Designs Pacifica some serious consideration.

Little is known about Quad Eight, though many feel that they were the best in their field. While debating is usually best left to the history books, A-Designs took up the challenge to take a closer look into the past and decide on its own. With much research, interviews, and listening, the A Designs came up with a product that they feel needs to see the light of day again. With Quad Eight Ventura, Coronado and Pacifica console preamplifiers for reference, we closely examined the design and composition of the heart and soul in the consoles of these great pieces. After much design, A/Bing, and beta testing, the result is a solid state, single space, rack mounted, microphone pre amplifier from the "glory days." Cloning being what it is (same old same old), the A Design decided to head outside the box and make the tribute something other than the legacy. The A Design added their own touch to bring it to present day applications of the recording world. And so the new A Designs PACIFICA was born.

What makes the A Design Pacifica different?
In building any mic-pre with soul, one of the most important elements are the transformers. A Designs actually tracked down the original drawings for the old Quad 8 console transformers and went one step further - they convinced the son of the original Quad 8 designer to rebuilt them for A Designs -by ear-by hand. After many prototypes of core alloys and experiments in winding techniques, the sound of the A Designs Pacifica was born. Employing sonically crafted input and output transformer pairs, the A Designs Pacifica's sound is unlike anything on the market.

Direct Inject
Unlike modern transformerless designs, The Direct Inject front panel input is designed to go directly to the input transformer for fullest sound. The A Designs Pacifica offers extraordinary tone to today's guitar, bass and keyboard players.

Custom wound input AND output transformers
In building any mic-pre with soul, one of the most important elements are the transformers. Color Scheme
A Designs Audio wanted to keep the look of the old Quad Eight consoles with its Pacifica; the faceplate is a creamy off-white and the cast-aluminum knobs are red along with the red and gray switch caps. All of these are duplicates of the original colors from that era. The A Designs Pacifica is as distinctive in looks as it is in sound.

Pad, Phase and 48v
The Pad is a -20dB, the Phase reverses Polarity, and the 48v is a full 48volt Phantom Power supply for condenser microphones. These three features will provide you with all the tools necessary for a great sound.

A Great Preamp for the Singer / Songwriter
    Anonymous

With its available gain and simple switching, the Pacifica is a solid high quality non-nonsense preamp. I use it primarily for vocals and acoustic instruments. While preamps may impact the overall sound less than the choice of microphone or room, the Pacifica does add body to the source while leaving the top end open and airy. This results in tracks that have a very professional “finished” sound. I need very little EQ with the Pacifica and mixing becomes a simplified process. While many enthusiasts spend a great deal of time comparing preamps, there is no question that the Pacifica delivers the goods. The Pacifica provides the warmth, body, and top end of many great preamps in one elegant no-frills plug & play design.

    Rock and Roll
    Rob S

The Pacifica is an excellent preamp for elements that you want to stand out of a mix. There is a presence to tracks recorded through the Pacifica that makes them really pop. To my ears this pre has a very distinctive tone that is punchy yet warm. However, sometimes I feel like tracks recorded through the Pacifica have a little less pure clarity than some tracks recorded through other high-end pres. This is the trade off for the presence and warmth of the unit.

    Great preamp
    Jordan Ross

The pacifica is my favorite preamp I own. What is great about this one is it adds some color, but not too much in my opinion, making it great for a wide variety of sources. I have had success with acoustic instruments, vocals, electric guitar, and just about anything else. I would be comfortable tracking a whole project on this preamp.

    Happy user
    Tim

Don't have many preamps to compare the Pacifica with, but it's definitely a big step up from my old ones. Currently using it as the 'go to' pre for vocals, guitar, percussion and DI. The sound is big, smooth and clear. Has the pad in/ out option for varying saturation as well. Excellent build quality. The staff at Front End Audio & A Designs were extremely helpful in getting the preamp configured for my country's power. Big thank you to Alan from FEA and Peter from A Designs!

This is one of the best pre's ever!
    jay matheson

This pre sounds good on everything. I really couldn't imagine not having it. it's shines on vocals, guitars drums, percussion and the di's on the front panel are great. The Pacifica is built like a tank and has a relationship with microphones like no other pre that i own. The tracks recorded using the Pacifica always sit well in the mix. It can sound aggressive or smooth depending on the source. what more could you want from a mic pre?

    A Designs rocks!
    el igloo

I've had this preamp for over 3 years. When I hear my older recordings I can hear instruments struggling for their place in the mix. Not so with this preamp... Now I can appreciate its clarity, depth and harmonic balance. It makes EQing each track easier. Surprisingly versatile given the amount of knobs; just work the gain stages, pad, etc. Nice!

Great lows, airy highs, packs a punch
    KL

This mic pre is awesome. Somehow it beefs up the low end and adds headroom to the high end, giving your tracks room to breathe. And the tone you get from it is deliciously vintage. I also use it to make up gain along with the Roll Music Folcrom, resulting in a better defined low end and an opened up top end, not to mention a punch that gives the mixes just the right amount of 'umph!' Great piece of gear, and it looks great in the rack too.

A Designs Pacifica Or my life before and after
    Bourian Boubbov

After doing a shootout with numerous original and cloned preams (tube and transistor) for me the clear winner was the Pacifica! Some might say, you can't compare different types of pre, but my goal was to find the most inspiring one. Despite few controls incredibly versatile with amazing lows that say"AUTHORITY", punch, and warm definition, beautiful mids and amazing, airy highs. Wonderfully open, larger than life sound, superb transient handling and you have to hear what the pad does to a bass to believe it!! Snare drum, drum buss, flute, French horn, Rhodes, analogue synths, guitars, vocals... Sonic heaven! Truly modern yet elegantly vintage. There are only a few preamps you MUST hear before you die. The Pacifica is one of them. Piece of art!!

What We Think

The A Designs Pacifica really is one of those must-have microphone pre-amplifiers. The circuit is one you already know - the old Quad Eight Pacifica and Coronado consoles are well known for their great sound. In fact, one of the most celebrated rock albums of all time, Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' was crafted on a Quad Eight console. So, there really shouldn't be any question as to the sound quality of the Pacifica. It's a character piece and it injects a wonderful body and musically present top end into your recordings. Being a transformer balanced input and output design, the Pacifica takes advantage of the transformers' presence in the circuit, resulting in a punchy and forward sound without the potential injected murkiness that is there in some classic, celebrated, and outrageously expensive vintage pieces. I have found the Pacifica to be a wonderful preamp for vocals, snare and kick, overheads, acoustic guitars, electric guitars... you name it. It does have a little bit of a lifted top end, but it's not something that is irksome or ever becomes a problem. The goal here is to have a tool that is going to properly bring the signal up with a wonderfully seasoned flavor; here the A Designs Pacifica excels and has been recognized. As a result, the Pacifica is a vintage design reborn as a modern-day classic.
